Presently India is called as "Carp country" as the culture is invited by the fish farmers since three decades. But the tremendous increase in the production cost is unable to meet the market value. In quest of alternate species to carps, the  brood stock management, breeding, seed production, hatchery, nursery, grow out culture technology and health management studies are carried out in this species, wherein the short embryonic period or incubation period, fast organ development, easily manageable flow through system in hatchery, compatability, adapability to adverse ecological conditions, high market value  suggest that it is a suitable and potential species for small fish farmers,  commercial culture and also a promosing enterprise.
