OVAPLANT® USAGE IN A COHO SALMON (Oncorhynchus kisutch) CAPTIVE BROODSTOCK PROGRAM - TEN YEARS WORTH OF SPAWNING DATA

Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in captive broodstock programs can have trouble reaching final sexual maturation and therefore will not spawn.  To assist those fish that do not mature naturally, we inject them with Ovaplant®, a salmon gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue that works with the fish's natural hormone cascade to facilitate final maturation.  Injection is done after an ultrasound shows the eggs are developing and the fish are showing outward signs of secondary sexual characteristics.  Preliminary data analysis show some general trends between the two groups (Table 1).  Fish that needed Ovaplant were smaller on average than non-Ovaplant injected fish.  This size difference was due to differential growth in the rearing tanks and not from Ovaplant injections.  Additinally, Ovaplant injected females spawned later in the year, fewer eggs, and fewer fertilizable eggs, and fewer eggs eye up than did non-Ovaplant injected females.  All of these parameters except the number of good eggs and number of eyed eggs can be attributed to the smaller size of the females.  However, over the past 10 years, Ovaplant has allowed us to spawn 66 females that otherwise would not have spawned.  These spawnings were critical in keeping this endangered species from going extinct.   

Overall, Ovaplant has been a highly valued tool in propagating an endangered species that can be difficult to get to reach sexual maturity naturally when cultured in captivity.
