An update will be provided on the regional effort to formulate a shellfish initiative amongst the five US Gulf States (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida). The Gulf of Mexico Shellfish Initiative (GoMexSI) was called for by the Gulf Oyster Industry Council, and a current draft has been circulated amongst a pilot group of stakeholders. Goals include: 1) Ensure clean and plentiful water to protect and enhance shellfish beds, 2) Sustain commercial shellfish harvests and restore oyster stocks, 3) Create a public/private partnership for shellfish aquaculture, and 4) Use an ecosystem services approach to manage shellfish restoration. Several action items have been suggested, including a comprehensive Gulf Oyster Hatchery Initiative (GOHI) to establish large-scale oyster hatcheries in the Gulf as tools to support the GoMexSI goals. Over the last year, several Gulf States have moved ahead with state-oriented efforts to incorporate hatchery technology.
