Mainstream markets will only buy produce that has passed a food safety audit. This can be challenging for aquaponic produce since risks are poorly quantified, few audits are written to handle aquaponics, and some retailers have developed negative associations with aquaponics.

This presentation briefly discusses food safety hazards as currently understood in aquaponics. However it focuses primarily on mitigation, marketing and audit strategies, and FSMA compliance. This paper reports on results of the Aquaponics Association's efforts towards creating food safety risk management strategies for aquaponics and their adoption in the marketplace.
