APPLICATIONS OF SEAWEED Gracillaria sp. AS AN ALTERNATIVE FEED TO ACCELERATE ON SPAWNING PROCESS FOR DOMESTICATION OF GONGGONG Strombus canarium BROODSTOCKS

Gonggong (Strombus canarium) included in the Gastropod class and commonly known as snails or snail. Gastropod, derived from the Latin, meaning an animal which uses its stomach as walk or walk by using the abdominal muscles (gaster = stomach, podus = feet).

Gonggong shells much favored people consumed as processed seafood menu in many restaurants primarily in the region of the Riau Islands Province as Tanjungpinang and Batam as well as the Bangka Belitung Province. The current raw materials processed shellfish Gonggong almost in its entirety the results obtained from a capture in nature.

Based on existing conditions, it is appropriate that efforts need to be made to start cultivation activities in order to prevent the occurrence of extinction in the wild. Batam Mariculture Development Centre is again trying to carry out cultivation of Gonggong with broodstock domestication efforts initiated by giving seaweed Gracillaria sp. as their feed.

The activity begins with the 60 Gonggong broodstocks in an aquarium with a capacity of 80 litres volume and contains 40 litres of sea water. Seaweed Gracillaria sp. given as their feed during broodstock rearing as much 300 grams each 2 days.

The results of the activities indicate the acceleration of spawning process occur and characterised by the onset of spawning as much 3 periods with each period resulted a lot of eggs. The diameter of Gonggong's eggs as a spawning results varies greatly with an average size of eggs ranges from 310 µm.

Eggs of Gonggong experienced several phases of development then to finally turn into larvae that had been detached from the shell of the eggs and ready for larvae/seed rearing next.
