Super intensive shrimp aquaculture was developed in small concreted ponds based on  several considerations: (1) not require large area that easily to controlled and managed, (2) high productivity (3) loading nutrients originated from the ponds effluent can be managed by  providing waste treatment plant, (4)  negative impact to the environment could be easily  localized and minimized. A shrimp farming and its environment that are properly controlled from the waste discharge by waste management system is expected to be a farming system for vannamei shrimp that productive, profitable and sustainable. Therefore, superintensive vannamei shrimp aquaculture in small ponds is potential to be developed in the future.

This study was conducted using five of 1,000 m2 concrete ponds filled with 1.8 m of water depth, The ponds are equiped with submersible pumps, aeration systems, automatic feeder, central and collector drainage accompanied by an online time series water quality measurement (Figure 1).

Super intensive shrimp farming with stocking density of 1000 ind/m2 showed better performances compared to that of stocked at 500 to 1250 shrimp/m2 as shown in Table 1. These results indicated that super intensive shrimp farming in small pond is applicable and more sustainable if this farming sistem is operated  by considering the carrying capacity of environment.  This technology has potential negative impact to the environment, however it could be minimized by implementing the better farming technology and management completed with the controlled waste water facilities.
