MASS CULTURE OF CALANOID COPEPODAcartia sp. IN CONCRETE TANKS SYSTEM USING SEMICONTINUOUS

Copepods are zooplankton having a complete nutritional value for marine fish and crustaceans larvae. The copepod also has a very high reproductive rate, rapid growth, and high nutrient content. Predominance as natural feed, it increases survival rate, growth and pigmentation of larvaeeither as a single or as a supplement feed, and does not need enrichment. Availability of copepodin many marine fish hatchery still comes from natural catchment and has not in uniform single. Cultivation is needed to supply single copepod species sustainably.

Acartia sp. were cultured in concrete tankwith volume of 14 m3.Approximately five ind /LAcartia sp.were  used as inoculant. The culture was fed with fish meal: 12.5 g / m3, the C:N ratio of 4.90 per day. Rhodomonas and Thalasiossirawere added in to each tank at 400 cells/mL every three days. Harvesting was performed every day, half of the total volume and beginning on the eighth day. The harvest was filtered with conducted with planktonnet size of 30 µm. Then was filtered with planktonnet 275 μm sizeto pass the adults and finally counted.

The results showed that harvest of nauplii Acartia sp. had an average size of 150-170 μm of length, and width at 109 μm. The number of harvest fluctuated in each harvest. The peak of the harvest occured in 15-20 culture days in the range of 200-400 ind/L as in Figure 1. Daily harvest was better than that every of over other day yield of 260 ind/L. This study showed that Acartia sp. could that  be cultivated in a mass scale and harvested in semi-continuous system to meet required live feed.
