THE ROLES OF PADDLE WHEELS TYPES ON PRODUCTION OF SUPER INTENSIVE VANNAMEI SHRIMP  (Litopenaeus vannamei)

Shrimp is the main commodity of aquaculture industrialization in Indonesia. Super intensive shrimp culture where shrimp was stocked in high density is a potential land-based shrimp aquaculture to be developed. This aquaculture system demands more complex aeration systems to supply dissolved oxygen in the pond waters, which deal with small pond size, yet has deeper water. Paddle wheels are common aerators applied in shrimp pond aquaculture; however the analysis of paddlewheels performance in super intensive shrimp pond is not widely available. This study is aimed to analyzed the performance of two types of paddlewheels deployed in intensive shrimp ponds. This study was conducted in Shrimp pond Installation research in Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi. Two full concrete ponds with averaged size of each pond is 1,000 m2 and stocked with 800 ind./m8 of the L. vannamei were used in this study. In addition, the two ponds also applied additional aeration system, which one blower aerated these ponds. The results of study showed that survival rate and shrimp production in pond deploying two types of paddle wheels (two and six propellers) was lower than that observed in pond deployed one type of paddle wheels (two propellers). Furthermore, the productivity of paddle wheels in pond A was lower compared that measured in pond B (Table 1). In contrast no significant differences in water quality measured between the two ponds.
