ORNAMENTAL FISH RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY FOR THE WELFARE SOCIETY AND THEIR UTILIZATION

Indonesia has the potential and challenges of ornamental fish large enough.  Beside rich biodiversity owned ornamental fish are also proportional to the production and export until reached 5.31 million US $ in the first quarter of 2015.  With many potential and advantages of ornamental fish, as well as the development challenges that must be faced, exploiting the potential of ornamental fish there would have to support the government's vision, namely sovereignty (sovereighnty), sustainability (sustainability), as well as the well-being (prosperity). In order to support these policies, required some concrete measures, among others, 1) inventory and support research and development of ornamental fish applicative, 2) inventory and support research and development of ornamental fish applicative, 3) conservation (application of cultivation in the community), 4) the establishment and strengthening centers of ornamental fish. 5) strengthening marketing, 6) strengthen human resources.  Considerable potential both freshwater fish and sea is a challenge to scientists, farmers, stakeholders to develop in a variety of sectors including research, development, aquaculture in a sustainable manner that ultimately could be used to support public welfare.

Indonesian ornamental fish production of wild-caught and farmed in the period 2009 - 2013 grew on average by 20.9% per year. Ornamental fish production in 2009 reached 566.34 million head, and in 2013 increased sharply to 1.13 billion tails. The development of ornamental fish production from year to year are presented in Figure 1. Thus in general production in 2013 is increased by 101% in a period of 4 years, since 2009. The increase in the production of ornamental fish should be maintained and further optimized to support increase in ornamental fish trade Indonesia.

This production increase was offset by the increase in the trade balance significantly compared to previous years. UN-Comtrade data (2014) show that the ornamental fish trade balance in 2000 was US $ 13,314,846 and in 2013 increased by two times as likely to be US $ 24,185,107. The export value of ornamental fish on average in the period amounted to 15.81 million US $, with growth reaching 8.40% per year. The growth is far greater than the growth in the average value of exports to total exports of fish and fishery products in the same period, reaching only 5.43% per year. Increased ornamental fish trade balance along with the continued increase in the export value of ornamental fish in Indonesia.
