Information

Aquaculture is now the fastest growing segment of the animal production industry. Indeed, the aquaculture industry has benefited from the growing demand for seafood products, coupled with a dramatic decrease in supply of fisheries-based products. Aquafeeds are among the most important drivers for the aquaculture industry. Not only the nutritional requirements of target species must be satisfied, but a wide range of feed additives have been developed to improve growth, a more sustainable use of feed ingredients, an optimal use of feed, along with health enhancement and stress resistance. The field of functional feeds has been constantly evolving, and it has rapidly expanded into an economically important industry. Such feed additives are very diverse in nature and functional properties, but they all share a thorough R&D background often inspired in nature-based and biotechnological solutions. Given the rapid evolution of functional feed additives in the aquaculture industry, often fueled by the industry itself, it is timely to put together a collection of papers that cover the latest developments in this branch of aquafeeds.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect original research articles, opinion articles, review articles, as well as short communications on aquafeeds that showcase the most recent activities and R&D developments made by the industry and academic institutions. This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of functional aquafeeds and their applications, which will constitute a frame of reference for anyone who wants to know the state of the art and latest developments in aquafeeds research.

This special issue to be published in the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society will raise interest in the aquaculture community as a whole, and generate important opportunities for dissemination and interaction among academic, industry, governmental and non-governmental entities. All information published in this special issue, will also be spread to the wider aquaculture community through the World Aquaculture Society dissemination networks.

Expressions of Interest

Prospective contributors are invited to submit an expression of interest to the Guest Editors. Please send us a tentative title, list of authors, and abstract (up to 150 words). The guest editors will contact all potential contributors and inform them of the outcome of their pre-submission.

It should be noted that such pre-submission does not guarantee acceptance for publication as all papers will be subject to the Journal’s peer review process.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society website (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jwas) following the standard Author Guidelines, and the Cover Letter should clearly express that the paper is being submitted for publication in this special issue (Functional Aquafeeds). Manuscripts for this special issue can be submitted until November 15, 2018. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, opinion articles, review articles, as well as short communications are invited.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Author guidelines webpage.

Open access

In order to maximize the visibility of your research and increase the outreach, we encourage all those submitting to this special issue to publish as open access.
