Hudson Valley Fish Farms- Aquaculture Technician Description: Hudson Valley Fish Farms is one of the largest RAS facilities in the U.S. We culture Steelhead Salmon for human consumption without the use of vaccines, antibiotics or hormones. We are located just 2.5 hours from New York City and 3 hours from Boston. We raise fish from eyed egg to 3kg harvest size with the capacity for 1000 metric tons of production per year. Our highly advanced system utilizes digital monitoring technology and the latest forecasting and production planning software. This position affords the opportunity to gain invaluable animal husbandry experience and learn skills from eyed egg disinfection to final humane harvesting practices. Duties & Responsibilities: Animal husbandry: • Hand feeding • Calculating feed rates • Weight sampling • Health sampling and disease screening • Seining, grading and moving • Harvesting • Water quality testing interpretation of data and subsequent system modulation. • Careful observation of animal behavior and analysis of water quality data to optimize animal welfare. System maintenance: Operation of: • Biofilters • Drum filters • Foam fractionators • Ozone and UV disinfection systems • Pumps and aerators • Cleaning of tanks and system • Ensuring bio-security measures such as footbaths and hand sanitization are used by staff and visitors. • Monitoring supplies of chemicals, reagents, feed and oxygen. Accurate record keeping and organizational skills are a critical component of this position. Qualifications & Requirements: Strong understanding of fish biology and physiology is important. Candidates should be able to demonstrate robust organizational skills as this large farm requires planning and coordination to run efficiently. Teamwork is key to our company culture, being able to effectively communicate and discuss solutions in a professional manner is critical. Must be able to lift 50lbs.
