PhD applicants must hold a research-based MS degree with strong background either in microbiology, genetics, biochemistry or similar fields, and demonstrate their technical skills in general microbiology and molecular techniques (such as nucleic acid purification, PCR, ELISA, cloning, electrophoresis, sequence analysis), and statistical analysis. Practical experience in cell culture (mammalian and insect cells) is a plus. Minimum requirement for MS applicants is prior research experience in food microbiology.


I have recently joined University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) as an assistant professor of Food Virology in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department. I have vacant graduate assistantship positions in my laboratory for those who are seeking MS or PhD degree in Food Science. — Successful candidates will execute basic and applied research on food and environmental microbial safety, particularly on enteric viruses. The areas of interest include but not limited to, isolation, detection and characterization of viruses, environmental transmission, microbial source-tracking, physical and chemical methods to inactivate viruses in food and on contact surface, and in-depth study of virus structure and functionality in microbial community. The applicants are also expected to assist in teaching courses, mentor students, and contribute to departmental extension activities.
