Assistant Hatchery Manager/Research Technician (Oysters)

Job Details

This role will assist with daily hatchery duties ensuring algae production, larval/spat husbandry and water quality monitoring are maintained to a high level. This split role will also, under guidance, oversee existing strategic improvement and research projects including development of operating protocols for broodstock conditioning system, optimizing rearing conditions for juvenile oysters, working within existing genetic improvement program as well as other research/trials to optimize juvenile oyster health and production. The position will split time 50/50 between hatchery and R&D with research/trials taking place both within a laboratory and field setting.

The ideal candidate will be able to identify opportunities for improvement and coordinate with the Lembata Project Manager/Hatchery and Technical Grow-out Manager to implement the improvements. This position will be primarily based out of Lembata Bay, NTT Indonesia, but will be expected to travel to other sites as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Main duties

· Ensuring daily duties, including feeding, larval/spat husbandry and water quality monitoring are maintained to a high level

· Ensuring consistent supply of high-quality algae cultures

· Hands on involvement in nursery husbandry

· Identify opportunities for production improvements and successfully implement

· Assist with existing hatchery and grow out research and development as required.

· Maintain and collect data from the water quality logger

· Scope, implement and report on R&D projects

Secondary duties

· Ensuring the hatchery’s infrastructure and equipment are serviced and maintained with all risks minimized that may affect hatchery production

· Ensuring sufficient levels of spares and consumables are maintained

· Manage and develop staff

· Assist with general site management as required

This position is based in Lembata, NTT, Indonesia with medical insurance, generous leave entitlements and travel allowance included within the package.

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate would possess tertiary aquaculture or aquatic research education or have extensive work experience within industry.

Essential skills

· Background in experimental design, data collection and reporting

· Background in aquaculture, marine invertebrate husbandry (bivalve preferred)

· Willingness to learn a second language and immerse in a second culture

· Strong written and verbal communication skills

· Proficient in Microsoft office

· Able to work on the ocean in adverse weather

· Safety oriented

· Willing to travel by boat between remote sites within Indonesia

Preferred skills

· Experience with data analysis and basic statistics

· Experience managing small teams/project management

· Experience with small boats

· Certified open water diver

· Experience on a moped

· Wet lab experience (microbiology preferred)

· Experience with basic PVC plumbing
