The Journal has served as an important benefit to the society’s membership by publishing scientific advancements and innovations that contribute to growth and development of aquaculture worldwide. Its re-invigoration will enhance the value of the Journal to the society’s membership and to the greater aquaculture community. The newly revised Aims and Scope of the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society are: The Journal of the World Aquaculture Society (JWAS) is a scientific journal devoted to the advancement of technological innovations and solutions to major issues facing the growth of global aquaculture. For over four decades, JWAS has represented the part of the World Aquaculture Society’s overall mission that is devoted to effective dissemination of information, focusing on global aquaculture science, growth of aquaculture industries, and development and growth of sustainable aquaculture enterprises of all scales. In addition, the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society has been re-structured into sections that will improve scientific support for global aquaculture. The new sections include Editorials, Review Papers, Applied Studies, and Fundamental Studies. The following are descriptions of the content published in each section: Review papers provide a compilation and synthesis of the research literature on a topic of historical and/or current significance relevant to a species, production system, research methodology, national or international set of policies, science basis for regulatory processes, or emerging challenges or opportunities for aquaculture growth and development. Applied studies provide scientifically rigorous and applicable information for technological, management, policy, and science-based regulatory improvements that enhance productivity, marketability, food safety, consumer acceptance, and public values and understanding, or otherwise contribute to growth and development of sustainable aquaculture. Fundamental studies report results of novel research that reveal underlying mechanisms or test hypotheses related to basic biological, chemical, physical, or socioeconomic theories relevant to sustainable growth and development of aquaculture. We are seeking to report the top aquaculture science in each of the above categories through both discipline-specific research papers and inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches that address critical issues related to aquaculture. The Journal of the World Aquaculture Society is your journal. You can assist with its re-invigoration by submitting your best papers to the journal and encouraging your colleagues to do the same. — Carole Engle, Executive Editor, JWAS The New Structure of the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society a copy of a typed communication by Frank Cross and Bill A. Simco entitled Production of Channel Catfish in Ponds. Frank Cross was Bill’s major professor at the University of Kansas and Bill was a Research Assistant supported by the State Biological Survey of Kansas. The five-page typewritten document is dated December 16, 1963 and gives some indication of when Bill’s interest in fish culture developed. To demonstrate the stage at which catfish culture had reached by 1963, the document stated: If the [pond] owner intends to “sell” the fish produced, directly as meat or indirectly through “access fees” charged anglers, he should verify a demand for fish exists in his area, and should verify the legality of his plans. A publication based on Bill’s Ph.D. dissertation showed that his interest continued as commercial catfish production began to grow and was increasing rapidly by the time he and I spent that summer of 1968 in Stuttgart. Bill’s career spanned what was the beginning of interest in commercial catfish culture through the growth of the industry and into its maturity, making many contributions along the way. While most of my interactions with Bill involved aquaculture, he was anything but a one-dimensional educator. He taught various classes in the Department of Biology that, on the surface, were not related to aquaculture. However, I would argue that not only biology, but also chemistry, physics, and geology are other basic sciences associated with aquaculture; not to mention engineering. As co-Director of the Ecological Research Center at the University of Memphis, Bill was responsible in 2015 for obtaining reviews of graduate student proposals funded by the Center. I was one of the reviewers of those proposals, none of which related to aquaculture, but demonstrating that some very talented students interested in environmental studies had submitted competitive proposals. Bill’s involvement in the Center is another testimony to the breadth of his interests and expertise. Bill fought a battle of some three years with pancreatic cancer before succumbing to that horrible disease. Bill did not let his cancer interfere with his teaching and advising graduate students. I miss him and am just pleased to have been a friend, colleague, and admirer of Bill A. Simco. Rest in peace, my friend.
