The WAS Awards Committee concurs that an article written by Claude Boyd, Aaron McNevin and Jason Clay will receive the award as the best of those published in the four magazine issues of 2015. The article, “Resource Use Efficiency in Aquaculture: Examining the Known and Unknown,” explored the indicators that are used for evaluation of resource (water, land, energy, forage fish) use efficiency and waste production at aquaculture facilities. The authors argue that there only a few instances where sufficient data are available at the farm level to reveal the range and normal efficiencies of resource use for different species, culture methods and regions. Without such information it is impossible to set target efficiency levels that are both economically feasible and ecologically meaningful. The paper can be viewed, along with other archived magazine articles, in the Members Only area of the WAS website. Potential contributors should take note that this is monetary award that will be ongoing and made annually. However, the volume produced on farms has increased rapidly over the past decade, from 453,476 metric tons in 2003 to 730,962 metric tons in 2013, an increase of 61 percent. A freshwater fish native to the Yangtze River Basin in China, Wuchang bream in 2013 was the 26th most important aquaculture species (based on FAO FishStat database available at www.fao.org; accessed February 7, 2016) and the 14th most important finfish species, in terms of volume. Improved diets for fingerling Wuchang bream would contribute to increased growth and development of this important aquaculture species. The paper by Li et al. (2015) showed that vegetable oils could be used successfully to substitute for fish oils and recommended a combination of fish oil and vegetable oils in fingerling diets based on the growth performance, PPAR gene expression, and antioxidant effects.
