These resources should be freely available to general public rather than to permit their use for private ownership or commercial purposes” Further, mariculture of highly carnivorous fishes require huge amounts of wild fish for feeding and stimulates the demand for by-catch, which represents a loss of marine biodiversity and sustainability. Although marine parks may employ a handful of artisanal fishers, it may lead to loss of independent livelihoods for thousands of small-scale fishers. In addition to social problems, the establishment of highly intensive cage culture mariculture farms may impact marine water quality. The ecological impact and sustainability of the mariculture of seabass and other carnivorous fish need to be properly studied before launching large-scale production and establishment of marine parks are undertaken. Conclusion Small-scale cage culture is a new aquaculture venture, which has scope to be developed where there is a huge potential. Kundapur is an area of rich water resources. Using these water bodies for marine finfish cage culture will generate alternate employment and increase fish production. Financial assistance should be given in case of buying cage construction materials and seed transportation. Development of a seabass hatchery in the vicinity is desirable. If the availability of seed is assured, most of the shrimp farmers in nearby region would shift to finfish culture. This activity should be popularized and need-based research on seed availability and nursery rearing of young should be carried out. The State Fisheries Department can initiate the fishers to come forward to adopt cage culture in other parts of Karnataka.
