This issue’s selected paper is “Development of a Model to Simulate Nitrogen Dynamics in an Integrated Shrimp–Macroalgae Culture System with Zero Water Exchange” by Adolfo Sánchez-Romero, Anselmo MirandaBaeza1, Martha Elisa, Rivas-Vega, José Antonio López-Elías, Luis Rafael Martínez-Córdova, and Armando Tejeda-Mansir [47(1):129138]. Shrimp remains one of the most commercially rewarding species globally, yet concerns about nutrient release from shrimp farms to the environment are widespread. There is thus an increasing interest in production in closed recirculation systems and integrated aquaculture to reduce nutrient impacts. A clear prediction of nutrient flow between species in the system is, however, needed to balance stocking and production cycles. In their article, Sánchez-Romero and colleagues developed a dynamic model to simulate nitrogen fluxes in a fully-enclosed Pacific whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei production system with integrated culture of the macroalgae Gracilaria vermiculophylla. The model confirms previous experimental studies indicating that the best ratio between macroalgae and shrimp is 8:1, and also highlights the role of nitrifying and heterotrophic bacteria in regulating nutrient flows within system water. These factors must be included in any model predicting zero- or low-exchange system nutrient dynamics. As closed recirculation systems for shrimp production expand worldwide, the model described in this paper can be used to support system design and future modifications of existing shrimp production systems that incorporate extractive species.
