The conference organizers — the Asian-Pacific Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society and the Malaysia Fisheries Society — have announced the second plenary speaker, Dr. Mazuki Bin Hashim, Senior Director of Fisheries Biosecurity Division for the Department of Fisheries Malaysia. He will be making a presentation on “What can Malaysia offer to expand aquaculture?” which is directly linked to the theme of APA17, Transforming for Market Needs. With more than 38 years of experience in three aquaculture sectors, Mazuki is an advocate of aquaculture development in the country. He was Director of Aquaculture Development Division (2014-2016), Head of Sectoral Planning (2012-2014), Head of Investment and Technical Advisory (2008-2012) and Senior Fisheries Officer (2005-2008), Department of Fisheries Malaysia. Industry Sessions Sessions at the APA17 will cover all aspects of aquaculture within Malaysia and the region. The Malaysian farmers’ sessions, on July 25, will be organized by Department of Fisheries and Malaysian Fisheries Society. Shrimp and finfish farmers sponsored by the Department of Fisheries will attend. On July 26, five outstanding experts from Asia Pacific have been invited to present their advanced research developments on shrimp on the special Farmer’s Day program “The Advanced Research Developments on Shrimp Culture” organized by Sheng Long Bio-Tech International Co., Ltd. Travel Awards for Women and Students to Attend APA17 The award committee of the World Aquaculture Society, the Asia Pacific Chapter of WAS, together with external reviewers (12 scientists in total) evaluated the abstracts submitted by students for the APA17 conference. Altogether, 58 abstracts were ranked and the awardees for the Pre-Conference Student Travel Awards (US$ 400) are: • Rui A. Goncalves, University of Stirling, Scotland • Tin Han Chien, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan • Steven Gamble, James Cook University, Townsville, Australia The award committee is also glad to announce that, thanks to the support of Aquaculture without Frontiers (AwF) and three external jury members chosen by the WAS-APC, the women award submissions have also been evaluated and the awardee (US$ 600) for this year are: • Christaline George, Nanyang Technical University, Singapore • Indah Susilowati, Diponegoro University, Indonesia • Juli-Anne Royes Russo, Juli-Anne Royes LLC, USA We would like to congratulate the awardees in both categories for their outstanding profile in the respective categories. We also wish them to carry on working hard toward future success, being an example to their peers. The WAS-APC will carry on supporting excellent young and promising scientists as part of the oral and poster presentations evaluation taking place during the conference. Post-conference Tour to Marine Fish and Shrimp Farms Date: Friday, 28th July 2017, 0800-1900 h. Pick up at PWTC. Cost: US$ 100 per person. Morning: Depart from PWTC to Port Klang, transfer by boat to Ketam Island. Visit KS Aquaculture, an integrated marine aquaculture company, the largest cage farm in Malaysia with 4,000 cages off the island, farming king/tiger grouper, red snapper, pompano and Asian seabass. Lunch: Seafood restaurant in Pulau Ketam Island (Crab Island) Afternoon: Oasis Long Diann Bio-tech Sdn. Bhd., an indoor RAS facility to produce market-size hybrid groupers. Oasis has a hatchery and nursery for fry and fingerling production. This will be followed by a visit to a small and successful Pacific white shrimp farm MyRezky, with 14 ponds producing 6-7 t/ha/cycle. The farm is successful in culturing shrimp in low salinity and low alkalinity pond water. Both farms are located around Banting, Selangor.
