This group of wanderers worked day and night, all over the world, always with a goal in mind. Everyone thought they were lost, that their dreams would never come true. Finally, in 2014, the miracle happened. Aquaculture produced more seafood for human consumption than was produced by capture fisheries. Aquaculture was a reality. For decades, this group of dreamers has gathered together in one refuge, a place we all call home – the World Aquaculture Society. Today, the once small organization has grown and organizes events all over the world. We now have more than 3,000 members in more than 100 countries. Aquaculture is here to stay and it is time for Mexico to host a unique event that has finally united aquaculture in the Latin American and Caribbean region. LACQUA 17 will take place in the glorious port of Mazatlán. Talking about Mexico fills my heart with joy, it is a land of wonders and tradition, of beautiful beaches, happy people and amazing food. It is the land of mariachi, tequila and Salma Hayek. I could dedicate most of this article to explaining the overall situation of aquaculture in Mexico, but I do so here only briefly.
