Functional ingredient company Dabomb Corporation produces a functional soy-peptide product, 90 percent of which is exported to Southeast Asia and the EU. The Fish Breeding Association of Taiwan is the largest private group, consisting of 300 members that are strategically allied and financially supported by the Fisheries Agency. The Fortune Life Enterprises Co., Ltd is the largest sashimigrade tilapia fillet processing plant in Taiwan. The company provides 90 percent of the EU and Japanese markets with sashimigrade tilapia fillets certified to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council standard. P.T. Lucky Samudra, based in Jakarta, is owned by Misai, a Taiwanese who produces 600 t of pompano and barramundi in modern cages in the open sea. It has a processing plant for sashimigrade products certified by AquaGAP and fillets exported to the Japanese and US markets. Disease diagnosis company GeneReach Biotechnology Corporation is an R&D based company producing quick-test kits, PCR machines and up-to-date primer products certified by the OIE. There are many innovative Taiwanese companies in equipment and manufacturing, feed additives, larval and breeding technology, and ornamental fish are active in the region. Future Directions With the limited land resources of Taiwan, other than intensive aquaculture practices, environment friendly aquaculture systems should be encouraged. For example, aquaponics that combines an aquaculture farm with a vegetable farm should be widely introduced to farmers. Other systems such as aquaculture farms combined with solar power and sea cages configured with offshore wind power system are also being discussed.
