WWW.WA S.ORG • WORLD AQUACULTURE • DECEMBER 2018 17 Aquaculture 2019 — NewOrleans Peter CookConfirmed as Plenary Speaker Peter Cook, formerly of the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa, will deliver a plenary address that considers the question: “Has International Aquaculture Certification Resulted in Better Environmental and Social Outcomes of the Industry?” His main research interests have involved various aspects of the biology of mariculture species such as mussels, oysters and especially abalone. His research work on abalone was recognized internationally when, in 2000, he was elected President of the International Abalone Society. Peter is author or co-author of over 100 publications in the scientific and popular literature. In 2001, he took up an adjunct appointment at the University of Western Australia in the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management in Albany. Peter was elected as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aquaculture Stewardship Council in 2015. The tour will travel to Ocean Springs, MS to visit the University of Southern Mississippi’s Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center. The Center promotes the development of technology for production of commercially and recreationally important marine organisms of economic importance in the Gulf of Mexico region. The Center consists of approximately 100,000 ft2 of culture and research space devoted to live feed, broodstock, hatchery, and nursery/growout systems. Ongoing projects focus on spotted seatrout, tripletail, oysters, blue crabs, Atlantic croaker and red snapper as well as copepod production technology. The Center’s research capabilities include state-of-the-art laboratories conducting research in nutrition, genetics, disease and reproductive physiology of aquaculture species. Following lunch at Shed BBQ, the tour will travel to the Missis- sippi Department of Marine Resources’ Lyman Aquaculture Center. The Center features 14 lined, half-acre ponds and 10 earthen ponds of various sizes. Historical activities have focused on culturing fresh- water gamefish species such as largemouth bass and centrarchids for stocking, but since 2008 projects have aimed to develop pond-based aquaculture of estuarine and marine species including spotted seat- rout, blue crab, Gulf striped bass and red drum. Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2019 — Chennai, India The Indian sub-continent has a promising future in producing seafood from aquaculture because it has 8041 km of coastline, 3 million hectares of reservoirs and 1.2 million hectares of brackish water. India is presently the third largest producer of fish and is playing an important role in global fisheries. India produces over 10.8 million t of fish and shellfish from capture fisheries and aquaculture. India currently produces about 7 percent of the total global aquaculture production. The potential for growth is immense and the country is on the threshold of massive development in fisheries and aquaculture. Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2019 will be hosted by Tamil Nadu Dr. J.
