6 DECEMBER 2018 • WORLD AQUACULTURE • WWW.WA S.ORG ASC Approval of Wando Abalone Wando County, Jeonnam Province, held the “Declaration of Responsible Eco-Friendly International Seafood Certification” in August. The event commemorated the first Asian certification of Wando abalone by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). Fourteen abalone farms in the Chungsan Sea in Wando County have been producing aquaculture products according to the global standard since 2016 to obtain ASC certification. ASC certification for abalone has been obtained in three countries: New Zealand (Haliotisiris), Australia (Haliotisrubra) and South Africa (Haliotismidae). However, Haliotis discus hannai , the abalone breed that is mainly produced in Korea, China and Japan, had not yet received ASC certification. Fourteen Korean abalone producers have now achieved certification. As a result of this certification, Korea has become the major source of ASC-certified abalone, accounting for 14 of 17 ASC-certified operations worldwide. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) has supported the process of seeking ASC certification by abalone farms for the past two years as a way to expand abalone exports from Korea. With ASC certification, the difficulties caused by overproduction of abalone are expected to ease and domestic abalone production will expand in line with high quality standards. The head of the Fisheries Policy Department of MOF, Mr. Hyun-seok Shin, said that MOF will actively support producers of major export items such as gim (laver, seaweed), oyster, and olive flounder to obtain ASC approval. YSLME Regional Working Group on Mariculture The second meeting of the Regional Working Group on Mariculture of the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (YSLME) was held in November in Jeju. Eight participants from four organizations in China and seven participants from five organizations in Korea attended the two-day meeting, which was co- chaired by Profs. Jianguang Fang and Ik Kyo Chung. The meeting reviewed the progress of activities listed in the approved workplan for 2018 and discussed implementation arrangement for activities to be initiated in 2019. The following items were discussed: 1) Review of ongoing progress on promotion and demonstration of Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) in China and Korea; 2) Review of the IMTA training module and additional information to be added; 3) A framework and process to develop good aquaculture practices of IMTA; (4) Socioeconomic impact of IMTA as a part of good aquaculture practices in China and Korea, including case studies; and (5) Collaboration with other partners. The Korea-Spain Maritime Forum 2018 The Korea-Spain Maritime Forum 2018 was held on October at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Las Palmas, Spain under the theme of “The Cooperative Implication between Spain and Korea for Promoting Consumption of Seaweed in the European Market.” The opening ceremony took place with the participation of Prof. Rafael Robaina (Rector, ULPGC, Spain), Dr. Myung Saeng Jung (Vice President, KMI, Korea), Dr. Dr. Joon Seog Kang (former Vice Minister, MOF, Korea) and Mr. Tae Yeol Kwak (General Consulate, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Korea). Dr. Hyun Pyo Hong (Director, CEIMARPE) gave the opening lecture on “Seaweed Industry and Towards Cooperation between Korea and Spain.” Topics presented included “Seaweed to Feed the Planet” (Prof. Rafael Robaina, Rector, ULPGC), “Seaweed to Save the Planet” (Prof. Ik Kyo Chung, Pusan National Univ., Korea), “Seaweed Consumption and Production” (Prof. Juan Luis Gómez Pinchetti, ULPGC, Spain), and ‘Laver Industry in Korea and the Role of Fisheries Outlook Center in KMI’ (Dr. Dae Young Kim, Head, Fisheries Outlook Center, KMI, Korea). The forum discussion was moderated by Dr. Joon Seog Kang. with Mr. Raúl García Brink (Counselor, Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Spain), Dr. Jung Hee Cho (General Director, Fisheries Policy Research Division, KMI, Korea), Mr. Byoung Seo Yu (CEO, SEOIN BIO, Korea) and many experts from ULPGC. The 13th Korea-Japan Joint Symposium on Aquaculture 2018 The 13th Korea-Japan Joint Symposium on Aquaculture 2018 was held in November in Busan. The symposium was organized by the Aquaculture Chapter of the Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Science (KOSFAS) and the Japanese Society for Aquaculture Science (JSAS) and hosted by KOSFAS. Prof. Sang-Min Lee (President, Aquaculture Chapter KOSFAS, Gangneung-Wonju National Univ.) welcomed participants. Four sessions followed, chaired by Profs. Seok- Jung Kang (Gyeongsang National Univ.), Makoto Osada (Tohoku University), Su Hee Hong (Gangneung-Wonju National Univ.) and Sang-Min Lee. Two invited speeches were given by Dr. Keitaro Kato (Aquaculture Research Institute, Kindai Univ.) on “Breeding of Red Sea Bream ( Pagrus major ) - Application of Classical Mass Selection and Latest Genome Editing Technique” and Prof. Jeonghwan Park (Pukyong National Univ.) on “Application of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems for Sustainable Production.” Seven topics from Korea and three from Japan were presented. The 9th Korean Aquaculture Workshop 2018 A workshop on “Guidelines to Set Korean Standard RAS- Filtration Systems” was held in November as a satellite event of the Busan International Seafood and Fisheries Expo. The Aquaculture Chapter of KOSFAS and Busan Metro City supported the workshop and AquaInfo organized the program. This event was sponsored by KOSFAS, Purina Feed, Veolia, Expo-Net Danmark A/S, Pentair, Fishvil Co., Ltd. and Aquatic Genetics and Technology Co., Ltd. The objective of the workshop was to share information and knowledge on standard RAS filtration systems in Korea. Prof. Sang Min Lee (President, Aquaculture Chapter KOSFAS) opened and welcomed and Mr. C.S. Park (President, Purina Feed) gave congratulatory remarks.
