The workshop gathered over 250 participants, representing a mix of farmers, processors, distributors, students, researchers, professors and together and managers from co-op agencies. Workshop on the Future-oriented Role of Fish FeedManufacturers The workshop was held in November in Busan and was organized by the Korea AquaFeed Association and moderated by Dr. Jin-Hyung Yoo (Director, Korea Aquatic Life Institute Co., Ltd.). The first topic on “Future-oriented role of feed company for eco- friendly fish feed production” was presented by Prof. Jeong Dae Kim (Kangwon National University) and followed by the public hearing of the aquaculture farmers by Mr. Dong Eun Kang (Kimnyeong Fish Co., Jeju) and Mr. Hyung Baik Kim (Hwanam Fish. Co., Busan). The second topic on “Reports of on-farm field study of extruded pellet (EP) feed management” was delivered by Dr. Bong-Joo Lee (Aquafeed Research Center, NIFS) and the last topic on “Policy of EP implementation and promotion” was introduced by Mr. Gun Hyo Kim (Deputy Director, Aquaculture Industry Division, MOF). Prof. Hyon Sob Han (Fac. Marine Applied Biosciences, Kunsan National Univ.) chaired the discussion session. Mr. Chan Hwan Choi (President, Korea AquaFeed Association), Mr. Sang Gu Im (Director, Aquafeed Research Center, NIFS) and Mr. Alex Oh (Director, Kimhae Plant, Cargill Agri Purina, Inc.) were invited as debaters. Farmers, Mr. Hyung Baik Kim and Mr. Dong Eun Kang, other speakers, and Dr. Bong-Joo Lee and Mr. Gun Hyo Kim joined the discussion. Prof. Sungchul C. Bai (Aquaculture/Feeds & Foods Nutrition Research Center, Pukyong National Univ.), Mr. SungKyu Lee (Kyongwon Feed Co.), Mr. Jae Sig Kim (Jeju Fish-Culture Fisheries Co-Op) and many others joined the discussion. The 3rd Symposium on Olive Flounder Science The symposium was one of the satellite pre-events of the Jeju Olive Flounder Festival. The organizing committee (Chair: Prof. Young Don Lee, Jeju National Univ.) consisted of six agencies: The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS), Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), Research Group of Korean Olive Flounder Study, Society for Cheju Studies, and Marine Science Institute (Jeju National University). The event was hosted by the Jeju Fish-Culture Fisheries Co-Op and the Federation of Korean Olive Flounder Aquaculture. The three topics were presented under the theme of “Survival Strategy of Jeju Olive Flounder” were 1) Cultivation strategy of Jeju olive flounder for the fourth industrial revolution (Dr. Chang-Mo Ma, Aquaculture Fishing Village Studies, KMI); 2) Optimized cultivation strategy to the characteristics of the rearing environment of the olive flounder farm (Mr. Kyong Min Kim, Jeju Fisheries Research Institute, NIFS); and 3) Change and countermeasures in the consumer market of Jeju olive flounder (Mr. Ki Woong Yang, Jeju Fisheries Co-Op Trading Co.). The comprehensive discussion session was moderated by Dr. Jeong In Myung (Director, Jeju Fisheries Research Institute, NIFS). Mr. Dong- Keun Cho (Fisheries Policy Division, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province), Dr. Mun-gwan Kim (Director, Jeju Island Marine Fisheries Research Institute), Mr. Haeng Soo You (Chairman, Jeju Seafood Product Export Association), Mr. Yong Oak Han (CEO, Jeju Flounder Co.), Dr. Jung-Suck Lee (Vice Director, Center for Seafood Food Industrialization Technology Support, Gyeongsang National Univ.) and Dr. Eun-Young Baek (Team Leader, Aquaculture Monitoring Team, Fisheries Outlook Center, KMI) were invited as debaters. Over 130 participants, experts from all sectors (production, distribution, processing, administration, research, and academics) gathered to discuss the measures to cope with the rapidly changing consumer market and survival strategies for the future. The 3rd Jeju Olive Flounder Festival The 3rd Jeju Olive Flounder ( Kwang-Eo ) Festival was held in October in Jeju. The event was sponsored by the Jeju Special Self- Governing Province, Jeju Fish Culture Fisheries Co-op and the MOF. About 46,000 Jeju Island residents and 14,000 tourists participated in various events. All participants enjoyed the special opening concert by the Nanta percussion ensemble and the closing fireworks. Some joined a variety of contest programs such as catching fish with bare hands, the olive flounder cooking contest, the youth K-Pop dance competition, the singing competition and others. Specialty fish cakes, steaks, Pajeon (scallion pancake), Sam-hap (three together — fermented skate and steamed pork slices served with Kimchi) and many other seafood cousins with olive flounder were served at free taste-testing booths and sold at low prices. All festival profits were donated to the Jeju Community Fund. KOFFST International Conference 2018 The International Conference 2018 of the Korean Federation of Fisheries Science and Technology Societies (KOFFST) was held in November in Busan with the theme of “Fisheries Science and the Future of Fisheries.” Dr. Choong-Hoon Jeong (President, KOFFST) opened and welcomed participants. Welcome address by Mr. Jae Soo Ryu (Vice-mayor for Economic Affairs, Busan Metro City), and congratulatory address by Mr. Young-Seop Kim (President, Pukyong National Univ.), Mr. Jang Woo Seo (President, National Institute of Fisheries Science: NIFS) and Mr. Hee-Ok Park (Commissioner, Busan Regional Office, Food and Drug Safety) were delivered during the opening ceremony, moderated by Prof. Woo-Seok Gwak (Secretary General, KOFFST). At the plenary session chaired by Prof. Choon Bok Song (Jeju National University), the first keynote lecture on “Deep-sea fisheries: yesterday, today, and tomorrow” was given by Dr. Alexei Orlov (Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia) and the
