He developed his first fish and shrimp farm in Haleiwa, Hawaii after completing his Ph.D. in fish genetics at University of Hawaii. Jim was then recruited to be the Principal Investigator of the US Shrimp Consortium at Oceanic Institute where he first developed SPF shrimp in 1990. Following the highly successful rollout of SPF shrimp to the US industry, which resulted in a doubling of US production, Jim formed High Health Aquaculture (HHA) to commercialize SPF technology worldwide. Over 18 years, HHA exported more than 350,000 SPF broodstock to 26 countries, developed SPF breeding stocks with four species and pioneered breeding shrimp for virus-resistance and fast growth. Jim received nine highly competitive SBIR grants from three US agencies (NSF, USDA, DOC). In the industry Jim is called “the father of SPF shrimp” for his seminal work in this area. The global impact of Jim’s introduction and distribution of SPF shrimp was truly disruptive. Industry output grew from 800,000 tons in 1993 to 4 million tons (a 5× increase) by 2012. Jim’s development of the global SPF shrimp broodstock market also created a new export industry for Hawaii that is now worth over $30 million per year. Jim will provide an overview of where marine shrimp is today. Special Sessions at Aquaculture America 2020 There will be more than 70 technical sessions that cover all aspects of aquaculture, 11 producer sponsored sessions, as well as 16 new sessions unique to Hawaii, including sea cucumbers, pearl production, sea urchins and aquaculture for native peoples. The program committee has also been working hard to engage marine shrimp farmers and have five marine shrimp sessions including genetics and genomics chaired by plenary speaker Dr. Jim Wyban. There will be a new workshop for students called “Practical Skills for Aquaculture” which will be one full day of hands-on training on aquaculture systems and their maintenance designed to help students transitioning from academia to the farm. • Aquaculture for Aquatic Species Conservation Because the environment for aquatic species raised in commercial production can be significantly different from the conditions needed for rearing conservation species with regard to water temperatures, food/feeding rates and rearing situation, research with a focus on conservation is being done. Factors that are critical for the species in conservation programs such as their growth and body composition, morphology and physiology are affected by rearing practices. Session organizer: Ann Gannam (ann_gannam@fws.gov). • Seriola Aquaculture – Latest Advances in Farming Members of the genus Seriola are indisputably among the top finfish candidates for marine fish farming worldwide. While the USA seeks to catch up with the rest of the world in the marine finfish farming sector, the conference’s host state of Hawaii has been very progressive and can boast of successful commercialization of Seriola rivoliana, that are sold locally as Hawaiian Kampachi. Presentations will be made pertaining to research and development of culture techniques from spawning to market and descriptions of experiences on working farms. Session organizer: Mark Drawbridge (mdrawbridge@hswri.org). • Aquaculture Education, Extension and Outreach Special Session This session will provide an opportunity for presenters to showcase aquaculture education, extension and outreach programs. Designed to be inclusive in scope, program updates, STEM, demonstration projects, innovative technology use, communication, and program evaluation techniques may be presented. Aquaculture awareness and the transfer of credible aquaculture information to stakeholders, regulators and the public remains one of the most important issues facing a growing industry. Session organizers: Matt Smith and Forrest Wynne. • NAA Special Session – Aquaculture Drug Updates The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Aquatic Animal Drug Approval Partnership (USFWS-AADAP) Program will co-host a special session with the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies’ Drug Approval Working Group (AFWA-DAWG). Presentations will be made pertaining to aquaculture drug approval research and the progress of associated efforts, including case studies involving bactericides, parasiticides, anesthetics, spawning aids, marking agents. Session organizer: Julie Schroeter (julie_schroeter@fws.gov). • NAA Special Producer Session – Sterility in Aquaculture: Advances, Performance, and Impacts This session will include presentations from farmers, scientists, and extension specialists, working in the forefront of cutting-edge, applied methodologies to induce sterility, studies comparing performance of chemical, physical, and genetic techniques, and applied experiences. Functional sterility is an important management and production tools for finfish and shellfish aquaculture in many areas. The session is focused on what works, what doesn’t work, and how and why.
