Gijang Miyeok produced by Gijang C& T, a seaweed company in Busan, has been internationally certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The ASC-MSC certification is an international certification scheme that screens and grants sustainable green fisheries. Gijang Miyeok was verified by ASC and MSC with excellent scores in evaluation areas such as sustainable resource management, minimizing the environmental impact of farming, effective farmmanagement such as compliance with the legal system, clear employment relations and social responsibility in such areas as environmental impacts, safety, education and community interactions. The Yeongnam Sea Grant Center, an industry-academic cooperation organization at Pukyong National University has been preparing for international certification since 2017. Prof. Seok-mo Lee (Director, Yeongnam Sea Grant Center) said that the international certification will allow expansion of global exports. Le Monde Reports that “South Korea Wants to Convert the Planet to Seaweed” Le Monde, a leading French daily newspaper, has focused attention on the excellence of seaweeds from the clean southwestern coastal waters in Korea. Reporters Mr. Rémi Barroux and Mr. Julien Goldstein of Le Monde, France, visited the clean coastal waters of Jeonnam province (Haenam, Wando and Sinan area) and seaweed farming sites in July and September. They reported on seaweed aquaculture production and processing in Korea in an article entitled “Korea is Cooking Seaweeds for the Planet.” Reporters tasted various laver products from the laver processing plant in Jeonnam and visited the Seaweed Research Center, National Institute of Fisheries Sciences, Haenam where research and development on seaweed varieties for global warming is covered. Mr. Barroux reported that France produces only 80,000 tons due to lack of awareness of seaweeds and they have been used for livestock feed and for industrial purposes. More than 2 million tons of laver gim are produced annually in the clean seas of Jeonnam. Red Dot Disease in Laver Gim ( Pyropia ) Can Be IdentifiedWithin 4 hours The National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) said a new diagnostic method that can quickly and accurately analyze red fungal spores in laver gim. Red dot disease is seen as a red spot on the surface of laver and develops into a hole due to the infection by fungal-like Pythium sp. Red dot disease has caused a major decline in laver crop production in Korea, Japan, and China. This technology was developed through patent research between the Seaweed Research Center of NIFS and Pusan National University Marine Research Institute. This method can quickly identify to the species level using common gene amplification and restriction enzyme processing techniques, without proceeding to sequencing and analysis. To determine red fungal pathogens, the existing genetic analytical method requires more than 48 hours but the new diagnostic method can make the identification within four hours. Korean Aquaculture Technology Workshop on Sterilization in RAS The main theme of this year was about guidelines to set standards for sterilization systems in Korean recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Prof. Sang Min Lee (President of KOSFAS-Aquaculture Chapter) welcomed participants and Prof. Seok Joong Kang (Gyeongsang National University) chaired the workshop. Four topics were presented: “Guidelines for microorganism/pathogen management in aquafarmwater (based on practical knowledge)” presented by Dr. Joo Hyun Cho (AquaDream); “Suggestions for setting the basic guidelines for sterilization systems in Korean standard RAS – freshwater” by Mr. Chang Seob Kim (CEO, Eco Fishvil Co., Ltd.); “Suggestions for setting the basic guidelines for sterilization systems in Korean standard RAS – seawater” by Mr. Jung Ho Han (CEO, Fish Nest SystemCo., Ltd.); and “A newmeasuring method paradigm for pathogenic bacteria in farmwater” by Dr. Aurore Trottet (Mycometer AS). After the presentations, Mr. Woo-Seog Choi (MyungSun Co., Ltd.) moderated discussion session and networking time. The Korean Aquaculture Workshop is held annually, supported and organized by the Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Science (KOSFAS), the Korean Chapter of WAS and AquaInfo magazine as a side-event of KOSFAS Annual Conference and Business Meeting. The workshop serves as a major meeting venue for experts, government officials, researchers, students, suppliers, farmers and stakeholders to exchange and share information. This year’s workshop was held at BEXCO (Busan, Korea) in November. Biofloc-Aquaponics Technology Improves Productivity The National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) announced that it has developed biofloc-aquaponics (aquaculture + hydroponics) technology to raise fish and pesticide-free vegetables together. It is an eco-friendly, high-tech farming technology used to produce fish and vegetables. This technology uses effluent from fish aquaculture in hydroponic vegetable cultivation, where water is treated and recycled to the fish culture. In this system, aquaculture production of eel, catfish, smelt and tilapia is possible. Application of the technology improved productivity of eel and catfish by 8 and 39 percent, respectively. High-quality crops such as basil, ginseng shoot and lettuce are produced in the hydroponics component.
