Among the topics presented were: “Developments in RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) Technology” by Mr. Henrik Mortensen (CMAQUA Technologies, Senior Consultant); “Industrialization of Aquaculture” by Mr. Jung- ho Han (CEO, Fish Nest SystemCo., Ltd.); and “Smart Aquaculture – Practicing Sustainability with Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) Technology” by Dr. Timothy John Pfeiffer (Aquaculture Systems Technologies, USA). After presentations, Prof. Chun-woo Lee (Pukyong National University) and Dr. Sung-ju Jung (Chonnam National University) joined as debaters. The KOFFST International Conference 2019 The International Conference 2019 of the Korean Federation of Fisheries Science and Technology Societies (KOFFST) was held in Busan in November under the theme of “Climate Change and Variation of Fisheries Resources.” Dr. ChunWoo Lee (President of KOFFST and Chairperson of the Korean Soc. of Fish. and Ocean Technol.) welcomed participants. Dr. Bong Joo Lee (NIFS) chaired the invited speech “Perception of climate change impacts and adaptation of shrimp farmers in some coastal provinces of the Mekong River Delta, Vietnam,” given by Mr. Thai Van Nam (HoChiMinh City University of Technology (HUTECH), HUTECH Institute of Applied Science, Vietnam). Dr. Do Hyung Kim (Pukyong National University) chaired the invited speech “Pathobiome approach in disease management in shrimp aquaculture in the context of emerging diseases” delivered by Dr. K.V. Rajendran (Aquatic Environment & Health Management Division, ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, India). Dr. Kyungil Park (Kunsan National University) chaired a session “Aquaculture Development and Aquatic Animal Health challenges in Australia” given by Dr. Cecile Dang (Aquatic Animal Health Research laboratory, Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Waterman, Australia). Dr. Sang Gil Lee (Pukyong National University) and Dr. Jeong-Wook Choi (NIFS) chaired the Youngnam Sea Grant Session “Development of Local Fishermen Producing Nakdong-Gim and Related Industry.” There were 483 participants, 437 domestic and 46 foreign delegates from 16 countries. Eighty-nine oral presentations were delivered and 284 posters were shown in seven sessions. 2019 KOSFAS Annual Conference and Business Meeting The annual conference and business meeting of the Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (KOSFAS) were also held concurrently during the KOFFST International Conference 2019. Prof. Min Soo Heu (Gyeongsang National University) was elected as the president of the KOSFAS for 2020 and Prof. Sang-Min Lee (Gangneung-Wonju National University, President of Aquaculture Chapter) as President-elect at the KOSFAS annual business meeting. Korean Seafood Promotion During the ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit During the recent ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit on the theme of One Ocean, One Asia , and the First Mekong- Republic of Korea Summit, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in- troduced seafoods and high-tech fisheries and aquaculture to delegates fromASEAN countries. The Public Relations Center was operated in the Fisheries Promotion Hall during the Summit, exhibiting products such as fish cake, laver Gim ( Pyropia ), abalone; and research results and smart fish farming techniques of king abalone, king flounder, and ornamental fish by the National Institute of Fisheries Sciences (NIFS). The goal was to increase the awareness of ASEAN countries about seafoods and aquaculture technologies and provide opportunities for Korean marine industry companies to enter overseas markets. The commemorative summit brings together state heads from nine of the 10 member countries of ASEAN. The ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit is considered a diplomatic highlight of the Moon administration, which has promoted the New Southern Policy to broaden Korea’s foreign policy beyond its usual partners of the United States, Japan, China and Russia. Meeting of National Fisheries Research Institute Heads from China, Japan, and Korea The National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS, President Mr. Wan-Hyun Choi) hosted a meeting of the heads of fisheries research institutes fromKorea, China and Japan in Busan in November to discuss common issues and solutions in fisheries. This group has met regularly since 2007. The current topics of joint research cooperation fields among three countries include aquaculture technology cooperation, the marine environment, fishery resource management and cephalopod aquaculture technology. As a side event, a seminar on “Fisheries Diseases and Management” was held and research information on aquatic diseases, the three countries’ common interests and national disease management plans were exchanged. New Appointments Minster of Oceans and Fisheries Mr. Seong-hyeok Moon has made two new appointments. Mr. Wan Hyun Choi will be President of National Institutes of Fisheries Sciences (NIFS) for a two-year term. Prof. Young-Tae Chang will be the tenth President of the Korean Maritime Institute (KMI) for a three-year term. — Jin-Hyung Yoo, President Undaria seaweed has been certified by ASC andMSCwith excellent scores in evaluation areas such as sustainable resource management, minimizing the environmental impact of farming and effective farmmanagement.
