The freshwater prawn genus Macrobrachium is the most diverse among the palemonidae family.  They have tropical and subtropical distribution and more than a dozen of its species are distributed in the pacific side of America.

Two of the most common species , Macrobrachium americanum  and Macrobrachium tenellum , both have different potential attributes for aquaculture but research on the topic is understudied.  Present work revise main biological attributes of both species that might produce both pros and contras for its  possible culture in its native region.
