18 December 2011 President´s column In my last President´s column of the year, I would like to share with our readers some information about the WAS publishing program. One of the missions of the World Aquaculture Society is to gather and disseminate worldwide technical and other information on aquaculture. Therefore, a large publishing program is available to our members. This program includes the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society (JWAS), World Aquaculture Magazine (WAM) and more recently, the WAS edited book series. The journal and magazine are now available in electronic format. Our members choose in which format they wish to receive these publications. Non-members and library subscriptions for the Journal can be purchased through the On-line Store available at our web page (www.was.org). Information about submitting and preparing manuscripts and articles to the journal and magazine can be also accessed through the WAS web page. Journal of the World Aquaculture Society This is a quarterly scientific journal containing highquality, peer-reviewed scientific papers covering the full range of aquaculture topics. The history of the Journal began in 1970, the year after the establishment of the Society. The first publication was called Proceedings of the World Mariculture Society, which later became the World Aqua- culture Society. With time and an increase in members coming from the academic sector, some believed that the Proceedings was not a refereed publication, so the name was changed from Proceedings to Journal. James Avault was the first editor of the Proceedings. He served in that capacity until 1985. The first Proceedings in 1970 and all of those that followed were actually refereed. Each paper presented at the annual meeting was reviewed by three people. Yet the term “Proceedings” did not give the perception of being reviewed and edited. In his President´s Column of June 1998, Joe Tomasso attributed a great part of the success of the Journal to its editors. Craig Tucker, who was the editor in 1998, gives much of the credit of the success of the Journal to his editorial board. Thirteen years later, I endorse their words and recognize that most of the success achieved by the Journal must be credited to all the colleagues who served as volunteer editorsin-chief, as well as to the international editorial boards, which were comprised of top world-renowned aquaculture scientists. The creditability and excellence of JWAS has been increasing and it is now recognized as one of the most important peer-reviewed journals of the Aquaculture Sector. To attend incorporate new publishing technologies and also with the aim of offering better quality services to our members, a contract between WAS and a publishing house was signed at the end of 2005. World Aquaculture Magazine This quarterly publication is characterized by popular and technical articles on aquaculture and includes current events that are of interest to members globally. The first issue was published almost 24 years ago with the aim of replacing the WAS newsletter. During that time WAM became a well-recognized source of information for both academic and the industry sectors. Dave Aiken was the magazine’s brainchild and its first editor. Since 1998 the editor-in-chief position of WAM has been held by RobWorld Aquaculture began as a newsletter (above), transitioned to a magazine in 1988, and observed it 20th anniversary in 2008.
