Students first visited the research facilities at the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries - Sea Point Research Aquarium (photo) followed by taking a ‘Behind the Scenes Tour’ of the Two Oceans Aquarium located at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. Student Workshops There were two student-centered workshops at World Aquaculture 2017. Dr. Rodrigue Yossa conducted a workshop on scientific writing titled “Improving Scientific Writing and Tools for Research Organization.” The second student workshop explored the use of R, RStudio, and Github organized and presented by local Cape Town R Guru, Robert Schlegel and WAS student, Morgan Brand. This workshop introduced the use of RStudio for basic statistics and plotting, use of dynamic notebooks as organizational tools, and a demo of the collaborative functions of GitHub. Student Spotlight Competition The plenary session of World Aquaculture 2017 in Cape Town concluded by highlighting WAS student scholars and researchers via a spotlight competition, consisting of the three top abstract lead authors. Ballots were distributed to the plenary session audience to determine the winner. The three presenters were awarded cash prizes ($500 for 1st place and $200 each for 2nd and 3rd places) at the student social event, held at Two Ocean’s Aquarium. The winner of the Student Spotlight Competition was Rufaida Dhuhai Al Breiki from Sultan Qaboos University. Rufaida’s talk was titled “A genetic structure study of the scalloped spiny lobster from Oman.” The other two presenters were Inácio Mateus Assane from São Paulo State University and Eugene Moore from University of Southern Australia. Inácio’s presentation was titled “Thiamphenicol: in vitro activity against bacteria pathogenic to fish.” Eugen’s presentation was titled “Greenhouse basil and kale production using RAS effluent and solids in southern Australia.” Oral and Poster Awards Reece Wartenberg is the first place winner ($600) of the competition for his oral presentation titled “The impact of suspended mariculture and the future of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) in China, starting with the noble scallop.” Although based in Hong Kong, Reece is currently enrolled as a Ph.D. student at the University of Stirling working under the direction of his advisors Prof. Paul Lam (City University of Hong Kong) and Prof. Trevor Telfer (University of Stirling). Reece hopes to use his experience upon graduation to start his own aquaculture company based in Europe. The second place oral presentation honor ($400) went to Aldi Nel, who is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science at Rhodes University. Her oral presentation was titled “The effect of kelp inclusion in formulated feed on growth, feed utilisation and the gut microbiota of South African abalone.” Her research focus has been on the effects of food and culture environment on marine molluscs used for aquaculture in South Africa. Going forward, she aims to investigate how aquaculture candidate mussel species respond to the interactive effects of nutrient richness and temperature increases during different life phases. Fernando Valenzuela’s poster titled “Aquanursery: Innovation for in situ larval rearing of new species for aquaculture” received the first place award ($600) for poster presentations. Fernando’s research is focused on the captive reproduction of marine eels. During this period he has also develop an aquaculture engineering consulting company managed by his wife. Pierre-Olivier Fontaine was awarded second place ($400) for his poster titled “Co-culture of blue mussel and sugar kelp : Exploring the potential effect of seaweeds in deterring the effect of duck predation on mussels, Cascapedia Bay (QC, Canada).” Fontaine is pursuing a master degree in Marine and Coastal Management at the University Centre of the Westfjords, under the advisement of Dr. Éric Tamigneaux. Fontaine enjoys teaching in the aquaculture program at Quebec’s School of Fisheries and Aquaculture while continuing to explore the potential of integrated multi trophic aquaculture systems.
