The evaluation took place during the conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the end of July. The APC will continue to support excellent young and promising scientists as its conferences. The award committee together with external reviewers have chosen the following students for the high quality of their work: Oral Presentation Tin Han Chien, National Cheng Kung Univeersity, Taiwan (US$ 600): “Characterization of Gonad Development in Grouper with Gonad Specific Markers - PIWIL2 and VASA.” Gabriel Ataguba, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand (US$ 400): “Sustainable Aquaculture: Benchmarking Standards, Improving Certification.” Poster Presentation Syuhaida Isa, Malaysia (US$ 600): “Allometry of mangrove horseshoe crab Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda from the East of Peninsular Malaysia.” Saadiah Ibrahim, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia (US$ 400): “Effects of Different Forms of Feeds on Fecundity of Freshwater Prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii.” when he published peer-reviewed journal articles, edited three books, authored or co-authored 20 book chapters, many fact sheets and technical bulletins, and written extensively for the popular press. For the last 11 years, he has been a freelance consultant on commercial aquaculture and development projects, with expertise in water quality management, engineering design assessments, Best Management Practices, and aquaculture carrying capacity. John has spent time establishing aquaculture as a food source in developing countries where the technology and assistance is needed most, and he does it with a passion. He has served as a consultant for numerous organizations and companies and his expertise has been shared in Latin America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Honduras, Mexico, Costa Rica), Asia (Bangladesh, Vietnam) and conflict zones (Iraq, Afghanistan, DRC, South Sudan, West Bank). Zhanjiang (John) Liu Dr. Liu is a world authority on use of DNA marker technologies in aquaculture. As a researcher at Auburn University, he has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He has made many research milestones, including development of ‘all fish’ expression vectors that have been widely used in transgenic fish research and application, including high density genetic linkage map with over 253,000 markers covering the catfish genome. His research is widely cited, with over 12,000 Google Scholar citations. He has received numerous awards, including being named an AAAS Fellow. He has served as the Aquaculture Coordinator of the USDA National Animal Genome NRSP-8 since 2000. He has trained over 50 doctoral and 60 post-doctoral students and served on over 100 graduate student committees. He is recognized as an outstanding researcher in his field.
