Despite increased interest in aquaponics, expert-led training opportunities that can provide an in-depth look at commercial aquaponic production strategies are few and far between. With this in mind, the United States Aquaculture Society, Iowa State University and Kentucky State University have teamed up and will host a one-day Advanced Aquaponics Workshop: Application for Commercial Production. The workshop will be held on February 18, 2018 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada in conjunction with Aquaculture America 2018. An all-star cast of instructors from across the country will deliver a full day of aquaponic wisdom. Prepare to go beyond the “what is aquaponics?” topics and learn core principles for a successful aquaponics business. This group of world-class aquaponics experts will cover advanced topics targeted for commercial producers. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and receive real-world advice that will help take their operation to the next level. Presenters at the workshop include: • Angela Caporelli, aquaculture coordinator and marketing specialist with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture • Ryan Chatterson, owner of Chatterson Farms and the founder of the College of Aquaponic Engineering and Design • Janelle Hager, research associate - aquaponics with Kentucky State University • Dr. Jeremy Pickens, extension specialist in nursery greenhouse horticulture at Auburn University • Charlie Shultz, lead faculty in controlled environment agriculture at Santa Fe Community College and keynote speaker. Gain an improved understanding of industry trends, system design and engineering, plant care, economics and marketing, regulatory compliance requirements and aquaponic system management techniques with specific focus on the major revenue generator – the plants. APA 2018, Taipei, Taiwan Deadline for Abstract Submission Set It is eight months before APA 2018 and the steering committee is now active to ensure a very successful event for scientists and industry partners. The program committee, led by Prof. Ming-Wei Lu (NTOU) and A/Prof. Pham Quoc Hung (Nha Trang University), have set a deadline for abstract submission of 31 January 2018. Online abstract submission at www.was.org is encouraged. The theme of the conference will be Innovation for Aquaculture Sustainability and Food Safety. The three-day conferences program will offer special sessions and workshops covering all aspects of aquaculture in Taiwan and Southeast Asia on marine and freshwater fish culture, production systems, seaweed and algae, food safety, and many more. Plenary topics will include trends and prospects for Taiwanese aquaculture and biotechnology application in the aquaculture industry.
