Requirements include Bachelor’s degree in zoology, wildlife management, or related field; ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour events/assignments; minimum of 2 years experience caring for and handling wildlife in a similar environment (zoo, wildlife/nature center, etc.); and demonstrated supervisory or management experience. Experience with informal education, presenting live animal programs, and working with children are all preferred.


The Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) is looking for an experienced, motivated, and dynamic individual to help care for and grow our live animal collection, especially in the area of fresh and salt water, at its two public venues, the Museum of the Earth and the Cayuga Nature Center (CNC). The successful candidate must be knowledgeable about native and exotic aquatic and terrestrial vertebrate species and experienced with handling and caring for a variety of animals. Previous professional experience with fresh- and/or salt-water aquaria is highly desired. Start date should be no later than July 1, 2018. CNC is home to over forty live animals, including native and exotic small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fishes, and terrestrial invertebrates. The Museum is home to two large living coral reef systems, one representing the Caribbean and the other the Indo-Pacific. A major new freshwater aquarium exhibit focused on the fishes of Cayuga Lake is under construction at CNC, and will open in spring 2018. Responsibilities of this position include working with other members of the Live Animal Program staff to provide proper care, feeding, maintenance, and handling of the animals (especially fish and coral aquaria), as well as training and supervising volunteers, and designing and delivering educational programs using the animals.
