WWW.WAS.ORG • WORLD AQUACULTURE • JUNE 2016 15 (CONTINUED ON PAGE 16) The Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) is a technical public organization of Sector Production, Subsector Fisheries whose mission is to generate scientific and technological knowledge for the sustainable use of marine ecosystems and inland water, considering the state of resources, conservation of biodiversity and the impact of climate variability. IMARPE also contributes to national development with an emphasis on fisheries and aquaculture management in a timely manner. IMARPE, through the Directorate General of Aquaculture Research, has the strategic objective of building investigations that contribute to the development and innovation of aquaculture within a framework of sustainable production. IMARPE has an infrastructure and specialized equipment represented by the Aquaculture Research Center Alexander Von Humboldt (Headquarters) and decentralized laboratories strategically located in Tumbes, Huacho, Ilo and Puno. IMARPE conducts investigations about marine and continental aquaculture species of importance, generating knowledge and developing laboratory culture techniques from conditioning to the collection of seed or juveniles. In addition, studies on the production of live foods (microalgae, rotifers and Artemia), feed and nutrition are developing, as well as research projects in physiology, genetics, parasitology, biotechnology and germplasm conservation of priority species. Research in aquaculture in IMARPE began with work with breeding and rearing the scallop Argopecten purpuratus and fine flounder Paralichthys adspersus. In recent years research has continued with flounder by improving survival in larval stages. Also other species have been incorporated to contribute to the diversification of aquaculture in Peru. This is the case of research with Peruvian grunt Anisotremus scapularis and rock seabass Paralabrax humeralis, achieving conditioning and reproduction in captive from specimens taken from the wild; and red sea urchin Loxechinus albus, getting juveniles in laboratory and fattening in natural environment for future plans for repopulation and stock enhancement. Currently executed projects are being funded by the Budget Program - PpR No. 0094 of Management and Aquaculture Development to properly use water and aquatic resources available for aquaculture production and thus increase production levels and commercialization of aquaculture species at national and international levels. In that sense, IMARPE has been generating knowledge related to the characterization of abiotic parameters and responses of species with aquaculture potential to captive conditions and the environment where they live, to produce information that contributes to the development of IMARPE: The Peruvian Aquaculture Research Center Carla Aguilar Samanamud FIGURE 1.
