Kalimantan as the largest island in Indonesia and potentially support the aquaculture production since there are many idle marginal area such as low productive and burn easily peat land.  The main problem in utilizing the peat land is the low pH value, which is not suitable for common freshwater aquaculture.  But when it comes to indigenous species aquaculture such as snakehead fish, the peat land has the chance.

Mandiangin Freshwater Aquaculture Development Center (MFADC) establishing the peat land aquaculture station in Pulang Pisau district, Central Kalimantan province.  The aquaculture activity starts since 2011 by collecting the fingerling from nature and grow the out in controlled fishpond.

The aim of this activity is to utilize the peat land for aquaculture and to produce the snakehead brood stock to be which adaptive to aquaculture environment.  In term of aquaculture environment are responsive to artificial fish feed, adjusted with the low pH value, and able to be multiplied by both natural and artificial breeding.  Induced spawning of snakehead results 16.210 fingerlings.  The fingerling then reared in cages for two months and continue by grow out for five moths rearing period in tarpaulin pond.  The start average weight is 4.3 gram and the harvest average weight is 137 gram.  Condition factor value is 1.63 means that the fish are fat enough.  The survival rate during the rearing period is 75.43% and 2.09 of food conversion ratio.

Snakehead grow out in tarpaulin pond is running well indicated by proper water quality and good response to artificial feed.  By having the proper brood stock in number, it is hope that demand on snakehead fingerling can be overcome.
