IFW is the premier academic and industry conference of the insect farming industry for both insect as food and insect as feed.
The first “Insects to Feed the World” (IFW) conference took place in 2014 in the Netherlands and was hosted by Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nation. 450 people from 45 countries attended that first successful event. Conceived and organised by Professor Arnold van Huis, a tropical entomologist at WUR and by Paul Vantomme, Senior Forestry Officer at the FAO, the conference program included 112 presentations and 54 posters on key topics in the field and was preceded by a seminal FAO publication in 2013: “EDIBLE INSECTS: Future prospects for Food and Feed Security” (FAO Forestry Paper, No 171; https:// www.fao.org/3/i3253e/i3253e.pdf) whose authors included A. van Huis and P. Vantomme.
This report had been downloaded millions of times and generated extensive publicity. The report was translated in several languages, including Italian (translation coordinated by Prof. Laura Gasco and G.Parisi).
The second conference was held in 2018 in Wuhan, China and the third/ fourth editions in Quebec, Canada (delayed by 2 years due to COVID).
The fifth edition has taken place on June 19-22, 2024 in Singapore.
Ten years after the first successful edition, IFW has become a global leading event in the insect farming sector, bringing together academics and industry professionals from all over the world.
A perfect combination to foster a culture of continuous development in this growing field and to enhance knowledge sharing in a stimulating scientific environment.

Barcelona is among the most important cities showcasing Modernism, and Antoni Gaudi is its main representative. Just as Antoni Gaudí drew profound inspiration from nature's intricate designs to create Barcelona's most extraordinary architectural masterpieces, researchers addressing studies on immunity must turn to nature’s own blueprints to find sustainable solutions for fish farming.
Gaudí understood that nature holds the keys to both beauty and functionality, whereas the immune system of fish, particularly their mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues, has evolved over millions of years, representing nature's most sophisticated defence mechanisms. Like Gaudí, who saw in a leaf's structure the perfect design for a column, we must observe how fish immunity functions to design better farming practices. The delicate balance of immune responses, the elegant communication between cells, tissues, organs and the whole body, and the remarkable adaptability of aquatic organisms offer a blueprint for healthier and more resilient aquaculture systems.
The Organising Committee of the 4th International Symposium on Mucosal Health in Aquaculture (MHA2026) is delighted to invite you to be part of this outstanding event, which will be held at one of Barcelona’s architectural masterpieces, the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau in Barcelona (Spain), from September 7th to 10th, 2026.
Thus, the MHA 2026, a biennial event, serves as a leading platform for presenting and discussing the most recent advances in mucosal health research across a wide range of farmed aquatic species. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, MHA2026 aims to open up new directions for research and reinforce the current scientific knowledge on the role of mucosal health in advancing sustainable aquaculture practices.
MHA2026 will bring together an international scientific community, from early career researchers to leading experts, along with representatives from the aquaculture industry. The symposium promotes knowledge exchange and collaboration, bridging fundamental research with practical applications that strengthen aquaculture resilience and sustainability.
Would you like to join us and share with the scientific community your advances and research on mucosal health? Do not miss the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful Mediterranean cities and be part of the MHA2006. We look forward to seeing you in Barcelona.

“Aquaculture in Global Change”
Food systems, including aquaculture, are being challenged by changes resulting from global warming. These affect all forms of aquaculture, in inland and coastal marine regions, and especially small and medium sized
operators that may not have the financial and operational capacity to implement adaptation and mitigation measures.
Seasonal “extremes” in water temperature, availability and oxygen content and (for coastal areas) salinity, pH, sea level will have varying effects on aquaculture production that may require the diversification of
cultured species.
Diseases, parasites, predators, non-indigenous species and algal or jellyfish blooms can also decrease production and challenge aquatic animal welfare. These effects may require the relocation of sites or the
allocation of new sites for production. However, these changes may also provide opportunities to diversify to new species production or the combined production of species that can better mitigate effects.
Opportunities also lie in the development of a clear and transparent credit system for the carbon sequestration and other ecosystem services that aquatic animal groups, whether in freshwater or coastal habitats,
provide.
