MICROALGAE AQUACULTURE FEED PRODUCTION AT A4F IN PORTUGAL

A4F - Algae for Future, is a bioengineering company which designs, builds, operates and transfers industrial microalgae production units, from demonstration size to large-scale commercial systems. A4F has over 20 years of worldwide experience in industrial microalgae production as well as biomass and/or co-products sales.

A4F industrial production experience includes more than 17 different strains of microalgae, ranging from freshwater to saline or hypersaline environments, applying the most appropriate and industrially proven types of systems - from flat-panel and tubular photobioreactors, to conventional and cascade raceways, to Fermenters. The choice of strain, production systems and cultivation regime combination to achieve the desired product quality, and is at the core of our expertise. We match client's needs with site specifications and product marketing, to develop the best solutions to achieve the goals of each client and project.

A4F has strong testing and training capabilities with a unique Experimental Unit, with state-of-the-art and diversified types of systems for growth and processing microalgae biomass.  This GMO compliant pilot unit has currently 10 m³ of capacity, being expanded to allow testing and optimization of biological and engineering solutions for the production of new strains and products, such as high-value enriched biomass for aquaculture. The Experimental Unit also allows training costumer's personnel for best practices in industrial microalgae production. We combine these capabilities with relevant international market knowledge and experience on microalgae marketing and sales, as well as product development.  

A4F delivers solutions in all the stages of the value chain from (1) concentrated microalgae for live feeding or inoculation of other systems; (2) concentrated microalgae paste; (3) dried and processed microalgae.  A4F is a partner in several major microalgae R&D projects in Europe, including under the FP/ and H2020 frameworks in Europe, leading the technological development in microalgae production. This places A4F as a leader for large-scale and specialist microalgae production units.
