Effect of Artificial selection on genetic variation in Tropical Abalone, Haliotis squamata Reeve (1846)
Tropical Abalone, Haliotis squamata, is one of the important aquaculture species in Indonesia. Breeding of Abalone (H. squamata) has been developed at the Institute Marine Research and Development Gondol Bali. The main problem faced in abalone farming is slow growth during juvenile stage. This is suggested due to genetic and environmental factors. Artificial selection using individual selection has been inevitable approach for the breeding to improve genetic diversity by using allozyme electrohoresis. Therefore it is crucial to realize that how the artificial selection affects the genetic variation. Result of the study was seven batch F3 selected succesive artificial selection program related in the growth rate. The value of genetic diversity were decreased (0,074, 0,064, 0,050 and 0,050 respectively) with the increasing generation (F0, F1, F2 and F3). All genetic diversity indicated that variation would be a lost affected by artificial selection and breeding. Therefore keeping genetic resources would be great chalenge in the future.
