Tinfoil barb (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii) is one of potential local fish species for aquaculture development. The possibility of aquaculture development of tinfoil barb is very high because its genetic relationship with Java barb. The present study was conducted to obtain data and information on the characteristics, phenotype, and genotype of tinfoil barb population from Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan.

The present study consisted of fish collection, phenotype characterization, and genotype characterization. Fish populations were collected from Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan. Phenotype characterization was performed by using truss morphometric (Figure 1) from 30 fish on each population (Total Length= 15.2 ± 1.1 cm; Body Weight= 124.2 ± 28.5 g). Meanwhile, genotype characterization was performed by collecting 10 mg samples of fin from each fish population. Subsequently,  samples were analyzed by RAPD method.

The results of truss morphometric and RAPD analysis from three populations of tinfoil barb (Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan) showed that each population had different characteristic (Figure 2). Tinfoil barb population from Kalimantan showed higher variety compared to the population of Sumatra and Java (Figure 3).
